Volunteer and student placements can help you get the edge on a career in the creative industries. With This is Not Art (TiNA) approaching, Octapod, Critical Animals and Crack Theatre Festival are calling out for a number of volunteer positions that would also be suitable as student placements. As the festival gets closer, keep your eye out for other volunteer opportunities including with National Young Writers’ Festival.

THIS IS NOT ART

TiNA Volunteer Coordinator

Responsible for recruiting, inducting and supervising TiNA Volunteers.

Time commitment: Pre festival: 2 hours per week. Festival period: 5 hours per day + on call as needed.

Start August – early October.

CRITICAL ANIMALS

Marketing Internship

Responsible for coordinating and delivering Critical Animals marketing in the lead up to, during and post Festival. This includes preparing copy, images and video across social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), the Critical Animals newsletter, blog and website.

Desired skill set: strong written skills, knowledge of WordPress CMS, experience across social media platforms used by Critical Animals. Experience in photography and video desirably but not essential.

Time commitment: Pre festival: 3-5 hours per week. Festival period: 5 hours per day. Post festival: 3 hours.

Start August: early October. Festival period: 25 September – 1 October. Post festival period: 2- 4 October. Can be offered as an internship placement.

 

Catalogue Designer

Responsible for the finalised design of the 2017 Critical Animals publication. Catalogue designer will work to a brief prepared by Critical Animals Co-Directors and will work with Co-Directors to develop and refine the design for the 2017 Festival. 2017 Critical Animals Catalogue will go to print in August for distribution at the 2017 Festival (28 September – 1 October).

Desired skill set: strong grasp of design software (Adobe Indesign or similar), ability to communicate creatively and effectively problem solve. Time management and effective workflow skills a must.  

Time commitment: 40+ hours in total

Start June. Publication to print in August.

CRACK THEATRE FESTIVAL 

FESTIVAL ASSISTANT ROLES:

These roles have been created to harness the passion of the Newcastle artistic community into Crack Theatre Festival, so that the festival can be built by both a national and local community. They are also an opportunity to gain skills in Festival and Event Production. We are happy to provide professional reference letters at the end of the festival and roles can be offered as an internship placement.

Pre Festival: Start July – Early October.

Festival period: 25 September – 1 October.

The roles we are filling are ‘Festival Assistants,’ and we will shape the role around the individual and their talents and interests. The categories are:

Design-

What: Venue design and installation in the days leading up to the festival. We have appointed a head designer and design volunteers will work in collaboration to create and implement a design vision for the festival venues. 

Desired skill set: a passion for creativity and the arts, an ability to work collaboratively, a willingness to use hands on skills and craftiness to get the job done. 

Time commitment: 5 hours per day in week proceeding Festival + Post festival: 3 hours. 

Marketing-

What: Responsible for delivering Crack Theatre Festival marketing in the lead up to, during and post Festival. This includes preparing copy and images across social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), the Crack Theatre Festival newsletter, blog and website. 

Desired skill set: strong written skills, experience delivering content across social media platforms. Experience using Mailchimp desirable but not essential.

Time commitment: Pre festival: 2 hours per week. Festival period: 1 hour per day.

Admin/Producing-

What: The nuts and bolts of running a festival, such as emailing artists to ascertain their staging requirements or helping with documentation. 

Desired skill set: confident verbal and written communication skills, commitment to task and ability to follow up uncompleted tasks with artists, experience with Microsoft Office (esp. Word and Excel).

Time commitment: Pre festival: 2 hours per week.

Photography/Videography-

What: This role will require documentation of the festival over the festival weekend by roving between venues and either filming or photographing performances and events.

Desired skill set: must have own equipment and the ability to deliver material at the end of the festival. 

Time commitment: Festival period: 4 hours per day.

Tech Assistant-

What: Tech Assistants will work with the production manager to instal and work with lighting, sound and sets. Ideal for those wanting experience in festival and event production.

Desired skill set: a passion for event delivery, ability to follow specific instructions. Experience working with cables, lighting and sound equipment and knowledge of OH&S related to lifting heavy equipment, climbing ladders and working with live wires desirable but not essential. 

Time commitment: Festival period: 5 hours per day + on call as needed.

Festival Volunteers-

What: Festival Vollies can assist with install in the week leading up to the festival or volunteer over the festival weekend, being assigned to venues, welcoming the public and supporting the artists.

Desired skill set: a hands-on attitude, ability to take direction and help with what is needed to provide a positive festival experience for the public, confidence talking to members of the public and most importantly, a smiling face to welcome the public into a space.

Time commitment: Festival period: 5 hours per day + on call as needed.
