Newcastle Community Art Centre has a Temporary Home

Newcastle Community Art Centre (NCAC) has been on the lookout for new premises since becoming aware they couldn’t remain at their current Parry Street site in early 2015.

Artist and project coordinator Natalie Engdahl has been leading the search, working tirelessly investigating possible sites, holding meetings with Council and speaking with real estate agents. She can now take a breath and think about her next exhibition.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Hunter TAFE and can now announce that we are moving into a building, adjacent to the main campus at Tighes Hill” Engdahl said. “There is such a high demand for studios and we needed a place where our current artists could nurture their talents”.

It is an exciting move for us to be partnering with Hunter TAFE. There are synergies between our organisations and together we will look for opportunities for NCAC experts to work collaboratively with students and staff at Hunter TAFE.

NCAC acknowledge that this has been a community effort with Tim Crakanthorp, Sharon Claydon and Councilors and staff from Newcastle City Council all collaborating to solve the accommodation problem.

“We are in negotiations for a building that will serve as a permanent home but we still have some way to go with that. We have a vision to develop a cultural centre that will be a tourist destination as well as something all people from our region will enjoy, with artisans, food, music…the lot” Engdahl said.

The move will be complete by March 15. Meanwhile, if you are after artwork for your home or office, NCAC are holding a Moving Out Sale on February 18 at the Parry Street premises. For sale on the day will be artworks donated by studio artists, furniture, art materials, odds and ends from the centre and individual studios. All funds will go towards the costs of the move.

NCAC need financial assistance. To that end they have started a Go Fund Me campaign. If you would like to make a donation no matter how big or small visit https://www.gofundme.com/newcastleartspace

NCAC are taking Expressions of Interest from artists for studio space. Anyone requiring space and wishing to be a part of this artistic hub should contact Natalie Engdahl on natalie@ncac.org.au
