Micro Theatre

Micro Theatre – Newcastle’s very own, fun and quirky, Short Play Festival

Micro Theatre is an independent short play festival (5-20 minutes each) held in Newcastle, where short plays are performed in coffee shops and a small art gallery.

In 2015 we ran the festival as a pilot and we had great fun creating theatre in new spaces and blurring the lines between audience and actors. The festival’s success exceeded expectations, so we’re doing it all again with our first “official” season in 2016.

While Micro Theatre promotes local business and theatre talent, it is also a competition with the categories of: Best New Script, Best Production (for previously performed or reworked scripts), Best Actor and Best Improvisation, for when audience and actors get a little to close and things don’t go quite according to plan.

The 2015 pilot drew participants and audiences from a range of ages – from students to seniors, the bearded to the bald. The common element to our audiences is that they are open to new theatre and performance experiences. Audience members and participants liked the independent vibe and buy local ethos of the festival. In 2015 8 of the 9 performance nights sold out, a total of 362 tickets (not including 37 complimentary tickets given to writers and directors as a thank you).

So in 2016 we are back, a little bit bigger, a little more polished and just as much fun.
