Kay McFarlane Smith
Painting provides a constant excitement and challenge that allows me to express how I see and to convey this to others. My paintings are my interpretation of the landscape and reflect my feelings and reactions to it.
After graduating in Economics from the University of NSW, I taught in secondary schools and TAFE in the Central West of NSW. In 1980-81, I studied ceramics at the Central West Institute of TAFE and the following year began studying drawing and painting at Charles Sturt University and The Macquarie Art School. Following this, I painted and studied with a number of highly regarded and internationally renowned artists in watercolour, oils and pastels.
Whilst living in the Central West of NSW, I taught Art in schools and was a watercolour tutor for the Central West Adult Education College. During this time I exhibited my work in galleries in the mountains and in Sydney and exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in country NSW including the Orange Regional Gallery. In 1991, work was included in the Portrait of Australia Exhibition which travelled and exhibited in all states of Australia with the final exhibition in Darling Harbour Sydney. In 2002, I contributed to the “Peoplescape (portrait) Exhibition” at Parliament House Canberra.
I work mostly in oils and watercolour and have won numerous awards (see below) in a variety of media including watercolour, oils, photography and mixed media.
In 2005, I became an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of NSW . As an artist, I am fortunate to live in Port Stephens, a beautiful part of Australia and to have travelled extensively through Australia and overseas through North America, Europe and Asia several times. My works are represented in private, corporate and civic collections in Australian and in private collections in Japan, US, Canada, Saudi Arabia, China and England.
