Rae Richards long career as an artist demonstrates a life of evolving practice. Her paintings, appliqué fabric banners and ceramics have become representative of the nonagenarian’s style and interest in working with diverse materials and themes.

Overtime marks 60 years for Richards as a painter in this city. Arriving in 1957 with her young family and attending the local branch of the National Art School, she has become an enduring presence in the Newcastle art scene. In recent years she has taken a different approach to her painting. Continuing to probe techniques and ideas, her works move gently from the explorations and subjects of previous years, towards more reduced and dreamlike studies of colour and light.

This exhibition both builds on and deviates from Richards’ solo exhibition in 2014 at the University Gallery: Past Imperfect – Future Conditional – that presented an extensive survey of her practice. New paintings inspired by the poetry of W.B Yeats, William Wordsworth and James E. Flecker, are a meditation on memory and emotions. In her ninetieth year, Rae Richards is still taking chances, as she pushes the boundaries of her art practice to uncover something new and illuminating.
