The University Gallery partners once again with the Newcastle Music Festival, now in its third year, to present a stimulating fusion of art and music.

Painting the Song, an exhibition of contemporary Australian Indigenous paintings from the Sims Dickson Collection, explores the inextricable connections between music and Aboriginal art. Curators Deborah Sims and Matt Dickson examine the notion of Aboriginal painting as visual music—the literal painting of songs, music and dance. The works will resonate with specially selected musical pieces to be performed at the exhibition opening by composer and pianist Colin Spiers.

The University Gallery will be raffling an artwork at the opening to support this ongoing partnership with the music festival. Contact the gallery for more information or visit our website.

Exhibition dates: 17 July – 25 August 2018

Exhibition opening: Saturday 4 August 2pm

Gallery hours: Wednesday to Friday from 10am-5pm, Saturday 12-4pm or by appointment.
