Lord of the Rings

In 1989 Johan de Meij was awarded the Sudler Award for Composition for a new work Symphony No1 – The Lord of the Rings. It has gone onto to be one of the most enjoyed and most performed works for wind orchestra over the past 50 years. De Meij has gone onto to compose another 3 symphonies all of which are regularly performed along with many of his compositions for Wind Orchestra.
In 1991 the City of Newcastle Concert Band under their conductor Ian Cook gave the Australian premiere of the symphony. It was recorded for ABC FM ‘Young Australia’ and followed by 2 performances in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House for various festivals of youth music.
2018 is the 30th Anniversary of this epic work based on the books of the same name by JRR Tolkien. The Newcastle Wind Orchestra under their musical director and conductor Ian Cook are collaborating with the dancers from the National College of Dance to present this work in a dazzling visual spectacle combining music and dance as well as projected imagery to entertain the audience. The choreography is under the artistic director the College – Brett Morgan.
