Who could have thought modern jazz and entertainment would come together?
On stage humour, expressed through the music or through stage antics and costumes has a long history in jazz, perhaps exemplified best in the modern period by Sun Ra and in Australia by esembles like the Adam Simmons Toy Band and the Hoodangers.
Pen Island present a unique approach to standards, combining an eclectic range of influences approached through the traditional piano trio format. But beyond the eccentic antics there is musicianship of a high order from pianist Gerard Masters, bassist Brett Hirst and making his debut for SIMA, drummer MilesThomas.
The trio have recently released their first album, Just Blowing, on Ladder Recordings.
Stallion - drums
Phantom Jazz - piano
Lumberjack - bass
