BounceBack 2012 art exhibition
An exhibition of artworks created by a diverse group of Novocastrians who each share one common trait, the experience of mental illness, will open at 7pm on Tuesday 23 October at the Black Box Theatre, Newcastle Community Arts Centre.
The Loft’s Special Projects Officer TESS RENDOTH says BounceBack is the biggest exhibition of its kind in the Hunter showcasing drawings and paintings to sculpture, music, ceramics and written work.
“The artworks present a diverse landscape of experiences, reflections and ideas; giving exhibitors the opportunity to share their unique stories with the community and for their skills to be celebrated and recognised.”
“The aim of the exhibition, BounceBack 2012, is to show a body of work produced by people accessing mental health services through government and non-government service providers. Staff will also be exhibiting artworks, bringing the total number of artists on display to over 50 individuals.”
With most artworks up for sale this is a great way for the members of the public to show their support for the people and organisations involved. The exhibition aims to highlight the importance of art and creative practice in the cycle of recovery and to help the contributors by creating an environment that celebrates their successes and builds up the positive public profile of people who have or have been affected by mental illness.
There will be workshops provided during the opening hours of the gallery. These will be announced soon – so keep an eye out!
Hunter New England Health, The Loft Youth Arts and Cultural Centre, Newcastle Community Arts Centre, Richmond PRA, Mission Australia and Newcastle Youth Council as well as other organisations are joining forces to make the 2012 Bounce Back exhibition bigger and better than ever.
