The Lock-Up presents CONTROL, the first survey exhibition of Shaun Gladwell’s work in Newcastle, which brings contemporary video works by an internationally acclaimed Australian artist to Hunter-based audiences.
Presented to reverberate with The Lock-Up’s spaces and its connections to the city’s colonial and recent history, the exhibition contextualises Shaun Gladwell’s video works and key themes in his practice within The Lock-Up’s history as a site of actual and symbolic social control.
Developed in consultation with Gladwell, with whom curator Warwick Heywood has a long term working relationship, The Lock-Up’s former cells and exercise yards underscore various works by Gladwell which explore mythical and actual individuals who exist on the boundaries of social control.
“I had seen this strong trend in Gladwell’s work related to law and order and the outlaw figure and I wanted to curate a show that explored in detail this aspect to his work. As a former site of incarceration The Lock-Up is the most relevant art gallery in Australia to explore these themes. And Gladwell’s focus on youth culture in his early work relates so well to The Lock-Up’s edgy spaces, which are littered with graffiti – little acts of rebellion prisoners would do whilst locked up within their cell,” said Warwick Heywood, curator of CONTROL.
CONTROL features key Australian video works that have given an international profile to Australian video art as well as becoming hugely influential to a generation of younger artists.
ABOUT SHAUN GLADWELL
Shaun Gladwell established his career as an artist through a series of meditative videos that represented the artist performing a range of activities on a skateboard, more often than not in slow motion, and staged within various dramatic landscapes. From 2007-2009 he created work inspired by the Mad Max films, which explored the interaction, and sometimes the collision, of people, animals, and vehicles traversing the Australian hinterland. This work gained international attention when Gladwell represented Australia at the Venice Biennale in 2009. In October 2009, commissioned by the Australian War Memorial, Gladwell went to Afghanistan as an official war artist. More recently he has started making and displaying virtual reality works of art. Gladwell has developed an international profile and is currently based in Sydney and London.
ABOUT WARWICK HEYWOOD
Warwick Heywood is Curator of Art at the Australian War Memorial, where he has played a key role in enhancing the Memorial’s collection of modernist art and invigorating the Official War Artist scheme through commissioning key Australian artists such as Lyndell Brown and Charles Green, Shaun Gladwell, eX de Medici, Ben Quilty and Tony Albert.
Warwick is the author of numerous publications and his research has been published in peer-reviewed and industry journals. He has curated exhibitions and presented curatorial papers in prestigious venues in Australia, the United States (Washington, DC) and Korea (Seoul). He is the exhibition curator for Reality in flames: modern Australian art and the Second World War, currently on display in the Memorial’s Special Exhibitions Gallery.
ABOUT THE LOCK-UP
Located in one of Newcastle’s most significant heritage buildings, The Lock-Up is a multi-disciplinary contemporary arts space and inner city hub for creative thinking and doing.
The Lock-Up was the Newcastle Police Station and lock up from 1861 until its closure in 1982. Today it stands as a purpose built gallery space alongside rare heritage listed cells, an event and installation space in what was the former men’s exercise yard and an onsite apartment for its nationally-renowned residency program.
Through its artistic and public programs, The Lock-Up aims to stimulate and challenge audiences and to promote the current, cross-platform, experimental and diverse practices of local, national and international artists.
