NIMA Presents: Bella Groove @ The Underground
September 26 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm$10 - $15
Following a great show at Sydney’s Foundry 616, Canberra based Bella Groove travel north for the Newcastle launch of their debut album ‘City Lights’ at NIMA’s Tuesday Night Jazz. It’s a real homecoming for band leader Elise who grew up in the Newcastle area and for this special occasion she has assembled a truly all star band.
Conceived by band leader Elise Walsh (composer, vocalist and flautist), the album is an eclectic mix of originals and jazz standards. These Standards range from upbeat swing to a beautiful ballad by John Coltrane whilst Elise’s flute playing is showcased on Serenade to a Cuckoo by Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Originals include the classic swinging Should We through to the funky grooves of City Of Yes.
Elise has been a performer since the age of ten, starting out at The Australian Theatre for Young People. Classically trained on the flute from the age of eleven, Elise started learning jazz flute and vocals from the age of twenty one at the Sydney Conservatorium and with the Jazz Action Society. Her love for jazz stems from early beginnings. Her grandfather was a jazz band leader in the UK in the 30s and 40s. Elise’s mum played jazz piano and her Aunty played double bass. Music was always part of the Walsh household.
