Learn to Make Custom Fonts

February 28 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$880

Principles of Typeface Design & Custom Font Generation, with type designer Wayne Thompson.

Gain a deeper understanding of typography, learn how fonts work, and how to make them.

8 x Tuesday evenings 6pm-9pm, commencing Tues 28 February 2017

This course is for anyone who wants to design their own typeface. We will show you the primary techniques and tools required to make a font that you can type on your own keyboard.
We’ll start with drawing letters, learning about the principles of proportion and legibility along the way. You will move on to digitising your letters using Adobe Illustrator, and then to constructing a working typeface using font-editing software.
The course incorporates production time allowing your tutor to give personal supervision and guidance. Participants will graduate with a deep understanding of type behaviour, aesthetics and legibility, and the ability to create commercial-quality fonts of their own.
Both beginners and experienced participants are welcome. Experience in vectoring using the Pen tool in Adobe Illustrator will be an advantage. Students must bring their own laptop; temporary licenses for fontediting software will be provided.
Wayne Thompson is a type designer with a national profile and an experienced tertiary educator. This course is not only unique to Newcastle, it’s unqiue to Australia!
Required: BYO laptop with Adobe Illustrator software. Must have a basic to intermediate grasp of Illustrator’s pen tool. Suitable for qualified designers and design students.
