Colouring-out: a primary response to paint, colour and process.
Colouring-out is a new and exciting art exhibition by two artists from different sides of the art-track. Stevi Cannon is a sculpture and abstract painter, with formal art qualifications. Peter Sesselmann is a self-taught painter and muralist working primarily in the figurative and landscape genres. Finding each other and realising their mutual passion for artistic expression it seems natural that they are working together. This first dual exhibition expresses their mutual admiration and love of art. Although they don’t work on pieces together they share the same studio space and work off each others’ artistic energy.
The paintings are vibrant and expressive, full of new life.
Painted to jazz soundtracks, using his signature palette of blue, red, yellow, Peter conducts the paintbrush across the surface like a soundboard. The canvas or panel becomes his instrument and the paintbrush a tool to write abstract notes as he jams along to the music he hears and loves. Each painting is specifically linked to an album.
Working from the structure of the natural grain of the wood, and using acrylic paint from dry pigment, Stevi uses a range of individual painterly techniques to explore her first response to paint, colour and process. A planned and practiced series of moments is captured, engaging the viewer into the process.
An exhibition not to be missed if you like art and music. It’s chromatic, vivid and expressive. Well worth a look. The exhibition is at Sesselmann Studio & Gallery, situated in the beautiful lower Hunter Valley just off the Hunter Expressway.
