Lake Macquarie City Council
As one of the largest cities in New South Wales, Lake Macquarie is also the Hunter’s largest city, and accounts for approximately 37% of the Hunter’s population. Encompassing the large saltwater Lake Macquarie, which lays both physically and mentally at the heart of the community, the strikingly beautiful region is also surrounded by the Watagan Mountains, which provides a dramatic backdrop and a striking natural contrast.
Lake Macquarie City Council plays a wide and varied role in facilitating cultural development in the local area.
Council manages the Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre located at Warners Bay. The Centre boasts seating for 300, professional sound and lighting desk and a 10m x 10m proscenium arch stage. It also has an orchestra pit, fully equipped kitchen, disabled access, a giant drop down screen and data projector. The Centre is heavily booked for Dance Concerts, Opera Productions, Music Recitals and Theatre Productions. It is also a great facility for presentations, seminars and film nights.
Council also administers a Community and Cultural Assistance Program that funds community and cultural activity throughout the City. The Program has three closing dates per financial year and aims to encourage increased participation in local community and cultural activities, building a greater sense of community contribution to a vibrant cultural and community life in Lake Macquarie.
A new workshop room has been recently built onto the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery and more education programs in both visual arts and performing arts are planned for 2009.
