Acappella Nova Community Vocal Ensemble was started by Anna Sandstrom in 2002 for students who had completed Acappella singing at WEA and wanted to continue singing together. Samantha Cobcroft took over as leader in 2003.
We have performed for Live Sites, Hunter TAFE, Stomp Festival, Church services, concerts and private functions and are regulars at the Celebration Concert in the Sydney Town Hall. We are best known for their lively and generous sharing of vocal sound and are passionate about all being able to sing together regardless of previous experience. More than three quarters of the group do not read music and have had no formal music lessons. We normally perform unaccompanied vocal music from all periods - Gregorian Chant to Jazz - in up to 15 languages. In 2010 they performed a staged version of Handel's Messiah - one of the most challenging choral works.
To become a singer in Acappella requires no previous musical or singing training or experience - everyone is welcome. (A sense of fun and adventure is recommended!) Acappella currently contains men and women from all walks of life; a bass singer who is legally blind, 2 Artists, several employees of Hunter New England Health, a pain therapy specialist and a retired grandma who works as a volunteer for the RSPCA. are just some. We hope that you are entertained by the beauty of the music and the words, and inspired by the honest and enthusiastic singing of this unique group.
We rehearse on Tuesday evenings in Scots Kirk Presbyterian Chruch Hall, Hamilton.
Cuppa and chat at 5:30pm. Rehearsal 6-8.00pm. All welcome. No audition necessary.
