Inspirations for Civic theatre precinct.

Hunter theatre goers will be spoilt for choice next year with Newcastle's civic precinct hosting 30 productions for hardened audiences, music and dance lovers and families.

Newcastle council last week launched the season, which is the most ambitious in the six-years history of the subscription series.

Civic precinct manager, Daniel Ballantyne said the Inspirations subscription season was recognised as one of the country's most exciting and diverse line-ups of international, Australian and locally produced live performance.

Rockin' the Black Dog

The musical talent of the Hunter will sing and play for charity on saturday, December 6, to raise awareness of depression and other mental illnesses.

Rockin the Black Dog, a free, all-ages music festival will include The Seabellies, The Boat People, Vaudeville, and the Newcastle Chamber Choir.

The event, at Camp Shortland, will honour the memory of Julie Firth, a volunteer high school mentor who lost her life on Mothers Day 2008, following her battle with depression.

University Cancellor Professor Trevor Waring said almost 800,000 Australian adults annually would experience a deprerssive illness.
